Academia.edu

I came across this site a few days back. The site shows academics around the world structured in a 'tree' format, displayed according to their departmental and institutional affiliations. It also enables academics to see news on the latest research in their area - the latest people, papers and talks.

Academics are joining the tree rapidly. More than 24,000 academics have added themselves in the last four months. Some professors on the site include:
- Stephen Hawking - http://cambridge.academia.edu/StephenHawking
- Richard Dawkins - http://oxford.academia.edu/RichardDawkins
- Paul Krugman - http://princeton.academia.edu/PaulKrugman
- Noam Chomsky - http://mit.academia.edu/NoamChomsky
- Steven Pinker - http://harvard.academia.edu/StevenPinker

Independent researchers can add themselves at another portion of the tree.
Very soon all the colleges will be included in the tree and that is going to be very helpful for many.

PS: Slumdog Millionaire won 8 oscars today, Rahman 2!

Hi Angad,

if you are interested in social networks and social software for researchers, have a look at Mendeley (http://www.mendeley.com, I'm a co-founder).

Mendeley is free academic software (Win, Mac, Linux) to manage & share research papers and a research network to manage your papers online, discover research trends and connect to like-minded researchers.

Our vision is to create a "Last.fm for Research" (http://www.mendeley.com/blog/2008/07/an-excellent-euroscience-adventure-part-ii/), where a social research network emerges based on data, and less on already existing relationships.

Best wishes
Jan

Where would my place be? The root or the fruit of the tree? ;-)
